Tracking total research and development (R&D) expenses as a percent of revenue helps show a company's efficiency and maturity. The percentage will be very large (>100%) when a business is beginning to scale, but will tapper off over time, though for most software companies will always spend a significant percentage of their revenue on R&D.
R&D % of Revenue=R&D Expenses÷Revenue
